Bruges 30/09/2017

Walking along the maze of winding cobbled alleys and romantic canals, you imagine yourself to be in medieval times. The wealth of museums is a striking image of this city's stirring history.
Picturesque market squares, dreamy canals and old whitewashed almshouses all evoke a world long since gone. An amazing journey from past into the future.

Best of Bruges

Old town

The historic center of Bruges has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 thanks to its status as one of the commercial and cultural capitals of Europe and its enduring Gothic architecture. The Belgian city center is cited as a great example of a medieval historic settlement, even while it has evolved over the years.

Walking is the best way to discover Bruges. The city is rather small - you can easily walk across it in one and a half hour which allow you to explore Bruges at your own pace.

De Halve Maan (Straffe Hendrik) Brewery

Best place in Bruges to try the Brugse Zot beer. The brewery tour is in three languages: English, French and Dutch and is every hour over the summer and new year. The tour takes about 45 minutes including a visit to the top of the building from where you have a unique view over the city. Probably the only place, besides the much higher Belfry Tower and the Concertbuilding, where you can get a view over the city. You finish the tour with a brewery beer (incl. in the price).

Begijnhof

Surrounded by protective walls, these whitewashed cottages - clustered around a central garden carpeted by daffodils in springtime - have an air of tranquil purity. Established as homes for a Catholic order of single and widowed women, there were around 1500 of these begijnhoven in Belgium in the early 20th century, but only 22 remain. Dating from the 13th century, this is one of the best preserved, and home today to Benedictine nuns.

Kantcentrum

Watch lace-makers at work at the Kantcentrum. Lace blossomed in Flanders in the 16th century. Naaldkant (needlepoint lace), which developed in Italy, was predominantly made in Brussels while kloskant (bobbin lace) is believed to have originated in Bruges. The latter requires thousands of painstaking and meticulous movements of bobbins and pins. Each lace-maker had her own patterns, which stayed in the family and were handed down through generations.
